Council urges HELP Committee to provide pension relief, will unveil jobs report at October 30 media briefing

Enactment of funding relief would preserve American jobs, aid economic recovery

WASHINGTON, D.C. — "Today’s testimony in the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee makes clear that pension funding relief is critically necessary to forestall further job loss and promote national economic recovery,” said American Benefits Council President James A. Klein.

“Employer sponsors of defined benefit pension plans urge lawmakers to enact temporary measures that will help mitigate the effects of the economic downturn and ease the transition to full plan funding. These unprecedented circumstances require swift action by Congress and the Obama Administration,” Klein said.

“Legislation providing temporary pension funding relief is enormously important to every company, every employee, and every community across the United States. This is far more than a pension issue. It is a fundamental jobs issue and a critical economic recovery issue,” Klein said.

On Friday, October 30, at 11:00 a.m. (Eastern Time), the Council will host a briefing for the news media at which policy experts will discuss pension funding relief legislation and unveil a brand-new report on the importance of pension funding relief for preserving jobs.

The media briefing will be held by conference call and in person at the Council’s offices, 1501 M Street NW, Suite 600, Washington DC.
